The School of Education at MSU Denver is honored to preserve and build upon her legacy to continue her advocacy and impact on early childhood education in Colorado and beyond.
The Anna Jo Garcia Haynes Legacy Project was established to sustain and build upon Anna Jo’s impact and leadership in early childhood education. The project preserves the legacy of Anna Jo Garcia Haynes and her colleagues and mentors, who laid the foundation for equitable early childhood education in Colorado. This project captures their words, stories, and vision for the next generations of early childhood advocates and educators.
The Anna Jo Garcia Haynes Legacy Project includes the production of a documentary of early childhood education in Colorado through Anna Jo’s eyes that will be utilized in Early Childhood Teacher Education classrooms. Additionally, Anna Jo’s papers and other works are archived and will soon be exhibited in the place where Anna Jo was born – the Auraria campus. The project also includes hosting early childhood leadership panels; leaders engaging with ECE teacher education students; policy and advocacy trainings, and more. The Anna Jo Garcia Haynes Project ensures that current and future generations of early childhood educators learn of the work of Anna Jo and her peers in building, sustaining, and advancing early childhood education in Colorado.
To ensure Anna Jo’s work lives on, the MSU Denver School of Education has also established the Anna Jo Garcia Haynes Endowment to sustain and build upon the legacy and impact of her leadership and advocacy in early childhood education.
The Anna Jo Garcia Haynes Endowment will create system-wide change in the state’s early childhood education ecosystem. As Anna Jo deeply believes, parents and teachers are the best advocates because they are with children every day and understand their needs, potential, challenges, and promise more than anyone else. Being the second largest and most diverse teacher education program in Colorado, the School of Education stands ready to impact every child and family with young children in the state through:
The School of Education is primed to help early childhood teachers, leaders, and advocates in helping Colorado to be the best state for children in the U.S.
The School of Education believes that Anna Jo’s passion for advocacy should be continued through the spirit of collaboration with higher education and MSU Denver is leading the charge. With approximately 200 Early Childhood Education students in the ECE program each year, the School of Education has the potential to impact 4,000 children and their families each year by providing meaningful opportunities for both current and future ECE teachers to learn how to advocate on behalf of their students and communities. Through advocacy training, curriculum-building, seminars, research, leadership circles and summer workshops hosted on the campus, the School of Education provides a forum for ECE advocates at all levels to convene and hold the line on current ECE equity in our state while also planning around advocacy for future legislation and policies that impact, teachers, families and, of course, children.
